Read With Me?

I'm making great progress on the 1% Well Read Challenge this year. Unlike last year when I had to cram in a few short stories to beat the deadline, this year I think I'll finish ahead of schedule - yea!

This month I'm going to start The Last of the Mohicans (maybe finishing in August, depending on how quickly it goes). When I finish I will have my own movie night to rewatch the Daniel Day Lewis movie version ... oh how I LOVE that movie!

In October I'm going to try Frankenstein (in honor of Halloween of course). The last two books on my list are Cranford and The Lion of Flanders and I'll read them at some point before December 31.

So I'm wondering ... does anyone want to read any of these books with me? I thought it might be fun to do joint reviews or at least to both be reading and posting about a book at the same time.

If you are interested, or think you MIGHT be interested, let me know in the comment section. If no one replies then I'll read happily on my own. :)

I've started Last of the Mohicans and never gotten in to it. But I'll probably read Frankenstein in October! I've been wanting to do that.

I have already read both Cranford and Last of the Mohicans (and seen the film adaptation with Daniel Day Lewis at least twice), but I plan to read Frankenstein this year, so I might join you in October, too.
Is The Lion of Flanders the classic by Hendrik Conscience?

Yeah! I've got some takers! Thanks Rebecca and Anna - I'll be glad to read along with both of you.

Anna - Yes, that is the Hendrik Conscience book - have you read it?

You know what is weird? I am in my senior year as an English major and the fall semester coming up is the first semester where I have actually had to read novels instead of just short stories. So, I have a big reading list for this fall. I have already started some of them, but I doubt that I will have time to read much of anything else over the next few months.

All of that to say that I would really like to read Frankenstein one of these days. I guess I will just have to look forward to your review. Maybe after I graduate and things settle down a bit.

Depending on what comes up between now and then, I may just read Frankenstein with you. I've read it before, but I really loved it and would like another shot at it.

momofonefornow - What do they have you reading for class? Anything good?

Lezlie - I'd love to have you!

Cranford is on one of my challenge lists. When should we read it? :)

No, I have not read the Hendrik Conscience book, but it was taught in my Dutch literature class in grammar school. At the moment there are only two very expensive hardback editions in print, but if I come across a cheaper edition one of these days I might read along with you.

Hey, what a great idea. I will try and join you in reading Frankenstein in October.

Suey - Can we do September? Let me know if that works for you. :)

Anna - Now I'm a bit concerned ... I thought it was on gutenberg.org but it is not ... I might have to put that one off if I can't find a reasonably priced copy ... I'll let you know!

Robin - Glad to have you!

Heather, don't be too concerned yet. I was talking about copies in the original Dutch. There may very well be a reasonably priced English translation. Dutch books often are a lot more expensive than English ones (hardback, thick paper).

Oh good luck!! I tried reading The Last of the Mohicans back in high school and really didn't like it. I did a paper on the book vs. the Daniel Day Lewis movie and an old silent version from the twenties. All I remember is that there is a LOT of description of nature of the area. I just gave up after too many paragraphs describing trees, etc. I'm curious to see how you like it.

Haha...I forgot the rest of what I was going to write. I LOVED Frankenstein. It wasn't at all what I expected it to be like. And I've been wanting to read Cranford so maybe I'll read that with you!

Anna - I did a quick search - no local libraries have it, and it is $35 on Amazon ... I'll have to think more about it before I decide

Amanda - I'm on chapter 2 or 3 of MOHICANS and it is fine so far - lots of descriptive passages but they're not bothering me (yet?) - And I'd love to have you join Suey and I for CRANFORD in Sept. :)

Hmm. I thought I'd already commented on this. I'd love to take part in the Frankenstein read-a-long!

Michelle - Great! I'll count you in. :)

Good luck with "Last of the Mohicans." I had seen a Masterpiece Theater version of it years ago, seen the Daniel Day Lewis movie several times and thought it was finally time to read it a year or so ago. For all the action in it, I got so bored!

plays with needles - glad to have you!

Lit and Life - I've heard it is difficult ... but I'm keeping that in mind, so I'm doing ok so far.
