BBAW: Reading Meme

Today's Topic: A Reading Meme. Enjoy!

UPDATE: I've made it through about 100 of the interviews posted yesterday - if I haven't been to yours yet, don't worry - I'll get there!
  • Do you snack while you read? No
  • Do you tend to mark your books as you read, or does the idea of writing in books horrify you? No writing in books, but only because I give them away when I finish reading.
  • How do you keep your place while reading a book? Bookmark? Dog-ears? Laying the book flat open? Whatever is handy – all of the above!
  • Fiction, Non-fiction, or both? Both
  • Hard copy or audiobooks? Both
  • Are you a person who tends to read to the end of chapters, or are you able to put a book down at any point? I can stop anywhere but chapter endings are helpful
  • If you come across an unfamiliar word, do you stop to look it up right away? Nope
  • What are you currently reading? Cranford (for the read-a-long) and A Thread of Grace (for an online book club), and listening to book 11 of The Wheel of Time (getting ready for the release of book 12 next month) and also Homer's Odyssey
  • What is the last book you bought? Breaking Dawn (I simply couldn’t wait to borrow it, I had to have it right away) - UPDATE: yesterday Kiddo had me buy the newest Max and Liz book since it was on sale
  • Are you the type of person that only reads one book at a time or can you read more than one at a time? I have lots of books going in different places (my bedroom, my car, my office, etc.)
  • Do you have a favorite time of day and/or place to read? Anytime/anyplace is good!
  • Do you prefer series books or stand alone books? Stand alones in most genres, but series books in SciFi/Fantasy
  • Is there a specific book or author that you find yourself recommending over and over? YES!!! Barbara Kingsolver’s The Poisonwood Bible. Go read it RIGHT NOW!
  • How do you organize your books? On my new shelf I have them sorted mostly by color. UPDATE: Since everyone seems to be amazed by this in the comment section, here's where I got the inspiration - doesn't it look great?! Mine isn't that nice yet but I'm hopeful ...

By colour? Never thought of it!

I remember organizing books by color during my childhood. Think that sounds like a good project for my kids and their picture books.

Can't wait to see what you think of WoT book 12! I'm not planning on buying it when it comes out. I haven't read book 11, for one thing, and I definitely need a series re-read before I go anywhere new. At the moment I plan on starting that a year from now and just buying and going through the two new ones which should be out by then at the end. And by the time I finish, I will cross my fingers that the last book will be written and shortly to be released!

My fiance thinks it would be cool to sort my shelves by color, but then I don't think I'd ever find anything.

Organizing by color kind of blows my mind. My husband probably would like to try it (plus by size), but it's really hard for me to even imagine.

Hi all - I just updated my post with a link to the place that inspired my color-coded shelving. Here it is in case you missed it. Does it make more sense now?

Meghan - I know what you mean about the WoT books. I listened to all the audio books last year to refresh my memory. Brandon Sanderson will be in my area in October for the release of the new book and I can't wait to meet him! That's the reason I'm buying this book - so he can sign it. ;)

Interesting...have been reading a lot of responses to these questions today. I do enjoy them.

I am loving the color thing and the link you provided was helpful too. I need a pic of your bookshelf now though :)

I am thinking about taking the formal dining room and making something out of it. I really want to take our loft and make it a reading loft but the kids use it to play Wii and stuff. Maybe I can move them to the dining room. The only time we use the dining room is over the holidays really. We have a kitchen alcove with table already. Hmmmm.

Nana - Thanks for dropping by. I'll be sure to check out your blog sometime within the next week (when the BBAW craziness slows down).

Ti - I say go for it. Whenever I browse houses online I always plan how to convert the dining rooms into more useful space so I think yours is a great idea.

Must remedy that Serena ... must, Must, MUST. :)

I don't stop to look up an unfamiliar words either. I just don't have the time for that, unless the book is so boring that I'll do anything to stop reading lol!

Color sounds like a great way to sort. I bet it looks really cool.

The Poisonwood Bible is amazing - great recommendation.

I have to go back and re-read The Poisonwood Bible. I remember loving it, but I was just out of college and don't really remember the details.

I've been hopping along reading reading this meme, but the last question is that one that interests me: color is fun and at least you have some kind of system.

bermudaonion said...

I love The Poisonwood Bible too!

Except for the sci-fi and Kingsolver (ugh...I didn't like TPB) we're practically reading meme twins!

First of all, congrats on your BBAW award!!! YAY for you!

Second, I can't believe you can find the time to read 100 of the BBAW interviews... that is amazing and mind-boggling to me.

Third, I was the EXACT same way with the Twilight books -- my friend had "Breaking Dawn" and was going to give it to me "in a few days" and I just couldn't wait and downloaded it on my Kindle instantly. Those books are like crack!

And fourth (and last), I started the Wheel of Time series quite some time ago and then had to wait for him to write more (I think he was at 7 when I was reading them) and then I decided to stop and wait for him to finish and now BOOK 12 is just coming out!!! YIKES! I know he had passed away so I was wondering if the series got finished. But now it has been so long and those books are so big that I don't know if I can do it again.

Wonderful blog. I'm sure I'll be back!

I'm a recent follower...I love your blog! Congrats on your BBAW win!

I could not organize my 1400+ fiction by color...I'd never find anything. I have a hard enough time with them in order by author-LOL!

Heather J. @ TLC Book Tours said...

Lilly – Exactly. I can usually get the gist from the context anyway.

Crystal – It does! And glad to find another TPB fan.

Nicole – Let me know if you do re-read it – I’d love to see what you think now.

Beth F – Thanks, it IS fun.

Bermuda – YAY!

Softdrink – ok, I don’t think we can be friends anymore … ~LOL~

Jenners –
1) Thank you!
2) The interviews are my favorite part of BBAW. I knew I wouldn’t be able to keep up with everything this week so I made it my goal to at least work through all the interviews – even if it takes a few weeks. :)
3) Literary Crack. Exactly.
4) I’ve been reading the Wheel of Time since the mid 1990s. The space between the books got longer and longer and drove me crazy, but I can’t abandon it – it’s almost a part of me after all these years! I couldn’t read them all again though, so I listened to all the audio books last year (and it did take about a year) – you could try that if you want to get back into it. The final 3 books come out in Oct. ‘09, Nov. ’10, and Nov. ’11 so you definitely have time!
5) Hope to see you again soon!

trueblue – Welcome, and thanks! I do like the way my color system looks, but I’m not sure if it works just yet – I only set it up a few weeks ago and I’m still undecided.

The Poisonwood Bible is still sitting on my shelf waiting to be read. I promise I'll read it soon (and by soon I mean hopefully within the next year).

I like the color sorted bookshelf post that you linked too, but I'm just too uptight (not to mention too forgetful) to sort my own books that way. :)

Dawn @ sheIsTooFondOfBooks said...

I could organize my kids' shelves by color, but not mine ... I'd never find anything. And who am I kidding?! Organize my kids' shelves?! Naw, it wouldn't last!

Heather J. @ TLC Book Tours said...

Alyce - I'm sure you''ll love Poisonwood ... I can't imagine you not loving it!

Dawn - Kiddo's shelves are a disaster too. :)

Anna said...

I really enjoyed The Poisonwood Bible. Great recommendation!

After clicking that link, I think I'm going to color coordinate my books whenever I get a replacement shelf. I really like how it looks.

I loved The Poisonwood Bible. I read it preblog. I have a couple of her other books sitting here waiting for me.

Heather J. @ TLC Book Tours said...

Anna - I'm so glad you enjoyed it as well. And the shelf thing DOES look pretty neat, doesn't it?

Natasha - Yes, it is one of my favorite books ever - glad to find another fan.
