The 1% Well-Read Challenge ... my 3rd time around

(I haven't seen a post about this challenge being continued in 2010 but I'm going to participate even if I'm just reading on my own.)

This is my third year signing up for this challenge and it is one of my favorites. I love that it exposes me to books that I'd not have encountered any other way, and also to books that I've always meant to read. My first year I chose random titles that caught my eye, last year I went for really old titles, and this year I'm focusing on the more modern titles:

  1. Out of Africa - reading this one now
  2. The Handmaid’s Tale
  3. Catch 22 - also for the LOST Books Challenge
  4. The Color Purple – I'm considering a summer read-a-long; might you be interested?
  5. To Kill A Mockingbird - can you believe I've never read this?
  6. Kim (Rudyard Kipling)
  7. The Golden Ass (Apulieus)
  8. The Last of the Mohicans - I started this last year but put it aside
  9. Dangerous Liaisons
  10. Half of a Yellow Sun
This year I'm also listing a few alternates:
  1. The Lion of Flanders - I couldn't find this one last year but really want to read it
  2. The Charterhouse of Parma
  3. Wide Sargasso Sea
  4. Candide

Are you signing up for this one as well? Have you done it before? Would you like to read any of these with me?

Also, I preordered a copy of the new edition of the actual book 1,001 Books You Must Read Before You Die; it comes out in March and I'm really excited about it!

You mentioned before about doing a co-review for To Kill a mockinbird...I'm up for that when would you like to do it? (possibly Feb? I'm still trying to finish this challenge the second!)

Lol! yes, I can believe you never read To Kill a Mockingbird. I haven't either :)

I wonder what you'll think of Wide Sargasso Sea should you decide to read it. I loved the book but I know many people hate it.

Have fun with the challenge!

I have read most of the books on this list, but I would still be game for a read-along of The Lion of Flanders (if I can get an affordable copy) and Dangerous Liaisons has been on my tbr-shelves for ages, so I would be interested in reading that one, too

I'd be up for a read along on the Color Purple. I read it years ago before the movie came out and I was just thinking the other day about that movie. Both book and movie were very moving.

Good for you for continuing this challenge whether anyone else does or not.

Amy - I'm thinking April or May ... would that work? I've got another read-a-long (still to-be-announced) coming in Feb/March. I'll give it more thought asap.

Lilly - I've heard good and bad things about WSS but I'm hoping that I like it. :)

bermudaonion - Thanks!

Anna - If I find a copy of LION I'll let you know - I'd love to read it with you, but I couldn't find a copy last year either.

Margot - Sounds great! I'll post more info as it gets closer to summer. :)

Good luck with your choices this year, I will definitely sign up for this challenge again/do it on my own if it isn't!

I've never heard of some of the books on your list (Lion of Flanders and Charterhouse of Parma) so that's interesting..

I'd be interested in the read-along for The Color Purple. It's been awhile since I read it, and I'll have to dig out my copy.

I'd also be interested in re-reading The Handmaid's Tale if you wanted someone to read with you. Just shoot me an email if you're interested.

Clover - I just saw today that there is a post for Jan/Feb reviews at the challenge blog, so it must be continuing - yay! As for those 2 books you mention, they are in the older part of the list - I like to find things there as I'm usually pleasantly surprised by them. :)

Anna - Great! I'm thinking summertime for TCP. Also, I'm going to do the audio version of THT next month - I'll email to see if you're up for it.

I haven't participated in this one in the past, but I think it's a great idea. As you say, a good way to stretch yourself beyond what you might typically read (kind of like a great book club that way).

Have fun with it!

Serena & Justin - Thanks!

Dawn - That's exactly how I feel. The books aren't always favorites, nor are they always good, but 90% of the time I'm glad that I read them.

I've never read To Kill A Mockingbird either! It's on my list of "must-read" books for this year.

Coffeegrl - I think I'll be doing a readalong of it in June - would you want to join us?
