Stardust (the movie)

Just before I left for Disney I watched the movie version of Neil Gaiman's STARDUST. What an adorable movie! I absolutely loved it. The wacky air pirates, the creepy witches, the ghostly brothers providing the peanut gallery ... what fun it all was!

One of the gals in my book club has been insisting that I read this book. She says I'd love it. Usually we have very similar taste in books but I'm not sure about this one. Just because I enjoyed the movie, it doesn't mean I'll love the book as well. I think that for me, this one was meant to be experienced and not read.

What do you all think? Is the book really worth reading? Would I get anything more out of it than I did from the movie? And if you haven't seen it, does the preview below look interesting?

Please share your thoughts - I promise to read them all when I get back from vacation!

Movie to me was so much better than the book. Skip the book; this is one you don't have to read the book. At least, that's my two cents: let the debate begin! :)

Hope you enjoyed your vacation.

Here's the thing: the movie is all about action and suspense. The book is a slower-paced fairy tale. I read it after seeing the movie and I was so confused by all the things that weren't happening, and all the backstory that isn't in the movie.

But once I realized that the book wasn't going to be just like the movie, I was able to read it on its own merits and I greatly enjoyed it. The book as written wouldn't have made a good movie, but it is certainly a great book.

I haven't read the book, but I love Neil Gaiman and I loved the movie, so it seems like it would be a slam dunk :)

I want to read Neverwhere first though, since I already own it.

The movie and book are two different animals. The movie is very fast paced and there are a lot of visual laughs. The book is slower paced and has a lot more witty type laughs. I enjoyed both of them, separately. It was one of the few times that I was happy that the book and movie were so different! The things that were cut out or changed (or just flat out not in the book) were things that were done because the two are different types of media. I definitely agree with Alison that the book as written wouldn't have made a good movie, but it made a great book!

I read the book first and loved it. Of course, I really enjoy books like this. The movie was good too, I thought. I agree with Amanda that the two are very different from one another. Although I do think the book was still better than the movie--but for me, that's a given no matter the book or movie.

I very much enjoyed the movie and like you, haven't picked up the book yet. I do plan on reading it, partially because I love Neil Gaiman and in part because I'm part of the Dream King Challenge. It was nice to hear before picking up the book to think of it as a separate entity from the book.

Oh I think both the movie and book are good. I read the book before I saw the movie and thought the movie did a great job. I agree with Amanda@ Lady Scientist that the book is a bit slower and more witty rather than the fast-paced version of the movie. It's definitely a book you should read though.

I liked the movie better than the book. If you read the book, I'd try to get an illustrated version because the pictures are lovely. I has the illustrated one for a short time, but had to return it to the library without finishing and didn't enjoy the trade paperback as much.

I saw the movie first and preferred it. The book was great fun, but it just wasn't quite as magical for me. Plus I read it for the read-a-thon so it went by really quickly without much time to savor. Read the book if you're looking for some light fun and have extra time. If not, just watch the movie again (and again and again).

I absolutely loved the movie. I had no idea it was based on a book by Neil Gaiman -- thanks for the heads up.

The book, to me, was boring. No offense to Neil Gaimen, but I think a lot of his books are like this - he has an amazing idea (I mean, looking for a fallen star? I would go on that quest) but then fails to deliver it. Both Coraline and Stardust the movies were much better than the books, in my opinion. The movie, on the other hand, I could just watch over and over again!

I've never seen the film but I did read the book. It was okay. It seemed kind of slow, but yet I read it quickly. I would read it to compare the two.
