Unholy Grail - books arrived today!

As you may recall, my book club is planning to read Unholy Grail by DL Wilson this month. Mr. Wilson lives in our general area and sent me the following email a month or so ago:
I checked out your blogspot and was extremely impressed by the quality of your group. You seem to be very honest in your evaluations and diverse in your opinions. Since books are an art form, your group seems to have a broad and intelligent perspective of this difficult medium. I am an author who just recently moved to the Maryland area. My first novel, Unholy Grail by Berkley, is a suspense/thriller based upon some highly researched religious myths, conspiracy theories, and doctrines. My publisher promotes it as fiction with content. I am finishing my second novel, which is a bio-terrorism thriller and would be very interested in the opinions of your group regarding Unholy Grail as a means of improving my writing skills. I find it important to receive a broad spectrum of comments.
If your group would be interested, I would gladly provide free copies of Unholy Grail and be willing to participate in your discussion by providing insight into the process and extensive research I used to create the novel, which is being translated into German, Russian, Norwegian, Bulgarian, and Romanian. You can get some perspective of my novel from my Web site at: www.dlwilsonbooks.com.
Please let me know if you would be interested.
Sincerely,
David (D.L.) Wilson
We voted on it and decided to accept his offer. Mr. Wilson graciously offered to give each member of our club a signed copy of his book, which he dropped off to me today. So I now have in my possession 17 personalized copies of Unholy Grail which I will deliver to the girls on Sunday (at our book club meeting where we'll discuss and watch The Kite Runner).

Even cooler than the signed books is the fact that Mr. Wilson is attending our book club meeting in July when we discuss his book. He's agreed to talk about his research methods and answer any questions we have about his book. My girls are pretty excited about this, needless to say.

I probably won't start reading this until July so it's fresh in my mind for the meeting but I'll get a review up as soon as I've finished it. Until then, if you've read this book please let me know what you thought of it. And if you have any questions for the author I'd be glad to ask them at our July meeting!

Note for book clubs: In case you are wondering WHY out club was chosen by Mr. Wilson to read/discuss his book, here are his reasons. First, we read books from all different genres. Second, we don't always agree about the books. He explained that he wants to hear from diverse readers who know how to verbalize their thoughts - good or bad - on a book.

How extremely exciting! on many levels - free books, SIGNED books, meet the author, COOL.

That sounds like it will be a really cool evening. It does make me wonder, though, do you think having the author there will make you be less critical of the work?

Natasha - good point! I was concerned about this as well but we have a plan. Each person is supposed to write down the three things they liked most and the three things they liked least about the book. The author told us he wants constructive criticism so we're thinking this is the best way to proceed ... what do you think?
