Last Christmas I didn't get to read the books I wanted to before Christmas. So this year I'm making a list.
Books I want to read with Kiddo before Christmas ...
- The Cole Family Christmas (Jennifer Liu Bryan) - I read this myself last year but never got around to reading it to Kiddo
- The Best Christmas Pageant Ever (Barbara Robinson) - I know the story but I've never read it - I think kiddo would get a good laugh out of it. We're listening to the audio version in the car this week.
- Angela and the Baby Jesus - a children's book by Frank McCourt, the author of Angela's Ashes - I've heard it is great. I actually have a copy now so I will be reading this with Kiddo soon.
- A Christmas Carol (Charles Dickens) - We want to see this in the movies, but I think we'd all benefit from reading it first. I started reading it to Kiddo this week.
- Christmas In the South (or If You Can't Fry It, Spraypaint it Gold) (David C. Barnette) - a Southern gal in my book club read this last year and it sounded quite funny
- A Christmas Memory - I've been meaning to read Truman Capote's short story for a while now
Do YOU have a Christmas (or holiday) reading list? Are there books you read around this time every year? Does your family have any bookish holiday traditions? I'd love to hear about them.

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is one of my all-time favorite holiday stories. It's a tradition in our house. I even found the movie version -- I cry every stinking time!
Christmas in the South sounds so good!
Do make the time to read Capote's A Christmas Memory... it is short. I used to read it to my students when I was a teacher - a beautiful story.
Julie P - It IS a great story, isn't it?!
Bermudaonion - I think you'd really enjoy that one.
Elisabeth - I will definitely try to fit it in!
I don't have some special tradition connected with reading books before Christmas but I like reading and I read the whole year. However, I try to read books that are associated with some special periods of year e.g. before Halloween I read Dracula. In my opinion books and Christmas are naturally connected because we always get some books for Christmas as presents, at least in our family. So, may be this is the tradition.
Have a nice day,
Elli
If I can just manage to read A Christmas Carol, I will be very happy!
I'm reading A Christmas Carol for the first time and enjoying it so far. I always read Skipping Christmas this time of the year.
Heather, I went back to my book report on The Best Christmas Pageant ever, and there was your name in the comments saying you wanted to read it with your son! I'm very fond of the Capote book.
mls GTA - That sounds like a pretty good tradition to me. ;)
Nicole - You can do it!
Ryan G - I think this is the first time I've actually read ACC as well. Haven't heard of Skipping Christmas before ...
Nan - Too funny! I'll be linking to your review when mine goes up next week.
The Capote story is one of my all-time favourite - I hope you enjoy it too!
Oh, I love "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever"
Nymeth - I've heard good things about it - I'm sure I will love it.
Jen - My review of it will go up this weekend!
I just finished reading A Christmas Carol today and really enjoyed it! I didn't know it was so short! I think Dickens has a great sense of humor. I love the beginning where they describe him. He's such an old grouch!
I have a few Christmas-themed books. So far this year I've read The Homecoming my Earl Hamner (the Waltons TV show was based on Hamner's books) and the Idiot Girl's Christmas by Laurie Notaro. Notaro is absolutely hilarious and I loved the book.
I also still have to read The Aluminum Christmas Tree by Thomas J. Davis...we had an aluminum tree when I was a child so I was drawn to this one...and an Irish Country Christmas by Patrick Taylor (part of the Irish Country Doctor series). Also, every year I read In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash by Jean Sheppard. If you've see the movie A Christmas Story, you're familiar with this one.
Last year I listed to Holidays on Ice by David Sedaris. His story of playing a elf at Macy's during Christmas is worth the price of the book. :)
Connie
Amanda - I agree, that part was great! Even Kiddo really enjoyed it. Of course, now we've taken to calling my husband Mr. Scrooge b/c he's so grumpy about the holidays ... :)
The Single Gal - Wow, you've got a great list of books there! I haven't read that Sedaris book but I have listened to him tell the elf story, and you're right, it is hysterical.
I love A Christmas Carol!
