Here's the email I had to send to a publisher the next day:
Lauren -
Good news and bad news ...
Good news - The Pages in Between is excellent so far! I've only got about 1/4 left to
read, and I think it's shaping up to be the best memoir I've read this year. I've been carrying it with me wherever I go, hoping to get a chance to finish reading it.
Bad news - I set it on the top of my car while I was getting in and (somehow) drove off with it still there. Needless to say, it disappeared somewhere along the side of
the highway. I drove the same road several times in the hope of finding it, but with no luck. I'm not only embarrased about this, but I'm miserable because I don't know what happens to Erin or the house or Weislaw in the end!
Is there any way that I can buy a 2nd copy of the book? I'd be so grateful ...
- Heather
Doh.
No reply from the publisher either.
You can imagine my utter joy when a new copy of the book arrived in the mail just two days later!
I'm hoping to finish it this weekend and get the post up early next week. It really is a fabulous book and I'm thrilled that I actually get to finish reading. Thanks for taking pity on me Lauren!

Oh my, that's pretty funny! Luckily most of us have been there (in one way or another)...sure sounds like she was understanding. Can't wait to read your review!
Oh man - the highs and lows of book reviewing huh?!
OMG, that is so totally something I would do! Haven't yet, but I've been scared that I did. Awesome that they sent you another copy. And FEEL BETTER!!! Allergies are no fun.
Poor Heather! But that email was just right...nice blend of humor and pathos. What author could resist?
Hope you're rid of those nasty allergies soon! I had them so bad when I lived in Oklahoma...
Good Morning,
I've never been to your sight before saw it listed so wanted to check it out. That was so funny about your book!! my husband put his wallet on top of the car and done the same thing with over 300 in it needless to say he did not find his wallet. I have horrible sinus problems, I can't even cut the grass with out getting severally sick I use allegra and nasonex everyday and it still flairs up. I will definately put you on my favorite to keep coming back!
Oh no! That's horrible. But to make you feel better, I think we've all done silly things like that. The other day, I realized that I put my scratch pad in the freezer when I went to take out my samples (instead of on my bench like a normal human being). Oh and I didn't realize this until I spent about a half an hour going crazy looking for it!
Oh,this is a great story (with a happy ending!)
I'm glad you were not too embarrassed to share it - we've all been there one way or another :)
Hope the allergies aren't bothering you so much now ...
Yuck, allergies. I hope that you aren't suffering anymore! That is a hilarious story about the book - at least you didn't leave a baby on top of your car, which happened in a news story I once read.
